The Bathroom Will Never Be The Same
(Neither Will My Family)

By Thea Swafford

I'm not only a do-it-yourself type person, but firmly believe in teaching myself as well. This usually draws a small crowd of onlookers, but in this case I was teaching myself how to decorate one of our bathrooms.

Now mind you this room is a glorified hall about three strides long with a toilet and sink on one side, a shower stall and linen closet on the other and a door on each end that both open inward.

Last year, I tried to wallpaper this room...

It would have been easier to bathe the cat. This room has more nooks and crannies than a Thomas' English Muffin by the time you work around the mirror, sink, commode and doors.

So... I stripped the wallpaper with the help of my daughter. The next step was to prepare the room to be resurfaced. It was my hypothesis that no matter how careful I was that I would get paint on something that I shouldn't... if I got paint everywhere that I should.

This took a little thought.

Armed with some of that cool blue painter's tape, that I saw on one of those 'victimize you while you're gone' shows, I proceeded to tape an outline around everything that shouldn't be painted. Then I took some Liquid Gold furniture polish and slathered it on the doors, natural wood moldings, counter top, sink, oak toilet seat and shower stall walls so that the paint wouldn't stick to these surfaces if splattered. I covered the floor with newspaper and the room was ready to get a facelift.

But what about me?

Not wanting to be covered with paint specks or have my clothes ruined I decided that the only rational thing to do was to put on my 'birthday suit' and make sure that I too had a coating of non-stick protection. I opted for cocoa butter lotion accessorized with  a bandana to cover my hair. Not attractive, but functional.

So far, so good, I had planned my work and was ready to work my plan.

The next step was to prime the walls. This was necessary because  the walls had not been painted before and were just wall board. Priming took a few days, it seems that I'm allergic to the fumes that the primer gives off... my eyes kept swelling.

The actual painting went smoothly (except for the occasional gasp when someone walked in on me) and was done in a day. I chose a nice butter yellow with an off-white ceiling to accent the natural wood features.

All in all, I give this method two thumbs up if you have the privacy.
